The
Graduate Alliance for Education in
Louisiana (GAELA) is pleased to
announce the availability of four
Dissertation Writing Fellowships for
the 2007 calendar year or 2007-08
academic year. Students who are in
the final stages of completing their
doctoral work in a Science,
Technology, Engineering and
Mathematics (STEM) discipline, and
who meet the eligibility criteria
below, are encouraged to apply for
the fellowships. The fellowships
are intended to allow doctoral
degree candidates to concentrate on
writing and defending their
dissertation.
The fellowships are for one year and
carry a $18,000 stipend. They will
be awarded on a competitive basis.
To be considered for one of the
fellowships, please submit a
curriculum vitae, a copy of an
approved dissertation research
prospectus and proof of admission
to candidacy, a letter of
recommendation from the dissertation
advisor, and a statement of your
expected defense date and career
plans after graduation.
Eligibility Requirements:
The candidate must meet all of the
following requirements to be
considered for a GAELA Research
Fellowship award.

A
U.S. Citizen or Permanent
Resident.

Belong to one of the following
racial/ethnic groups: Black (not
Hispanic), Hispanic, Native
American, Alaskan Native, or
Pacific Islander.

Enrolled in a full-time Ph.D. or
equivalent doctoral degree program
in a STEM discipline.

Recognition of the fact that the
award takes precedence over other
employment obligations for
recipients during their tenure as
Dissertation Writing Fellows.

Admission to candidacy for the
Ph.D. degree and a commitment to
complete the dissertation during
the fellowship award year.
Application Procedure:
It is the applicant’s responsibility
to provide all required information,
including letters of recommendation,
at the time of application. Application
packages that are not complete will
not be considered.
The letter of recommendation
should be enclosed in a sealed
envelope and signed by the
recommender.
Each application packet should
include the following items.

Completed and signed applicant
data form.

Copy of the approved dissertation
research prospectus.

A
curriculum vitae detailing all
professional activities.

A
brief description of the
applicant's career goals.
-
One letter of recommendation from
the applicant's dissertation
advisor.
Incomplete, late, or faxed
applications will not be accepted.
